The Discussion
Q: How has AI transformed your approach to solving industry-specific challenges?
A: Today, 40% of clinicians show signs of burnout. When you ask clinicians what the root cause is, most of them say “paperwork.” Indeed, a clinician spends about 16 hours per week, so more than 70 hours per month, on administrative tasks. And it’s all the more concerning because it often happens at home, after dinner. This is the infamous “pajama time.” As a result, 70% of clinicians don’t recommend the profession to their kids. This could result in a shortfall of 18 million health workers by 2030, according to the WHO, jeopardizing healthcare access worldwide.
At Nabla, we believe that AI can help. Nabla is an ambient AI assistant that alleviates the clinical documentation burden placed on clinicians. Nabla generates clinical notes in seconds from any encounter and exports them directly into EHR, creating a seamless workflow. Rather than replacing clinicians, Nabla streamlines all the clinical documentation, cutting the time clinicians spend on paperwork by 50%.
Q: How do you ensure your AI initiatives align with overall business goals and customer needs?
A: User feedback is at the core of Nabla’s product development. Every feature of Nabla is created with clinicians' feedback in mind. Thanks to our community of 30,000+ clinicians and their inputs, our product and machine learning team has built a highly customizable product, recognizing that each clinician has unique preferences for their clinical notes. For instance, the “magic edit” feature allows healthcare practitioners to personalize notes, adapting the style, length, and any other aspects they desire for their practice.
Q: How do you manage the integration of AI with existing systems and processes?
A: With its product-led growth strategy, Nabla was initially launched as a standalone product to automatically generate medical notes in real time during medical encounters. But, to truly streamline clinicians’ clerical tasks, deeper integration into clinical workflows is essential. That’s why, when we partner with health systems, Nabla integrates with Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) such as Epic, Cerner, Athena, NextGen, among others. Once the note is generated, physicians can directly export it into the patient’s chart, creating a seamless workflow. This significantly reduces the time clinicians spend on notes and on the EMR, enhancing their interaction with their patients.
Q: How do you address ethical considerations and data privacy concerns in your AI projects?
A: The data is always encrypted, and Nabla does not use encounter data to train its models unless the customer explicitly specifies otherwise. Regarding data storage, Nabla does not store the audio of the encounter and enables customers to define their own data storage policy. By default, the clinical note is retained for 2 weeks, ensuring a reliable export to the EMR, pausing and resuming encounters, and, when applicable, syncing across multiple devices. Organizations can adjust this duration — from mere seconds to several months — based on their specific needs.
