The Discussion
Q: Can you share a success story where AI significantly improved business outcomes?
A: We see the impact of AI on our customers’ business outcomes daily. Businesses using Grammarly save an average of 19 working days (almost an entire working month!) per employee each year, translating to thousands of hours that can be redirected to more impactful initiatives. That’s a massive edge that means beating your competitors to market and coming out on top.
Since implementing Grammarly, Databricks’ teams reported $1.4 million in savings annually, which they’ve reallocated to upskill employees and speed up employee onboarding.
ModMed saw a 28x ROI and a 69% improvement in written communications with our generative AI features, enabling employees to create clearer, more concise content.
AI-powered communication has a ripple effect: employees increase productivity by focusing their time on high-value projects, and their customers save time with access to straightforward, easy-to-understand information.
Q: How do you manage the integration of AI with existing systems and processes?
A: We spend so much of our workday having conversations across different channels and apps, and it’s overwhelming and often ineffective. We’re flooded with information. In the new era of generative AI, I’ve seen a push to take advantage of the opportunity to create more content at lower costs—but we’re already struggling with too much low-quality content. Who’s going to read it all?
Instead, the real opportunity in integrating AI into our existing workflows is to reimagine work processes and how we communicate. We want to rethink how users synthesize and use information, giving them time back to focus on impactful tasks and ultimately making work more efficient and even enjoyable. Our vision is for Grammarly to be a horizontal layer that works everywhere people work, empowering people to do better by making every conversation at work more fruitful.
Q: How do you address ethical considerations and data privacy concerns in your AI projects?
A: When we keep humans and the desire to augment humans at the center of AI, we can inoculate ourselves against many ethical concerns. In fact, I wish AI stood for ‘augmented intelligence’—the principle that AI should always be developed to enhance our human potential. Thinking of it as augmented instead of artificial keeps us all grounded in delivering real value. We hold ourselves accountable for developing AI that augments by committing to guidelines like our TRUE Framework, which stands for Trust, Responsibility, User Control, and Empathy.
At Grammarly, the TRUE Framework is the North Star for us. It guides how we make every decision across the business, ensuring we prioritize user trust and responsible AI at every turn. Regardless of the industry or product, frameworks like TRUE can keep technologists honest, ensuring we remain focused on innovating in the best interests of our customers—not innovating for innovation’s sake and without consideration of consequences.
Ultimately, we must remember that we—the humans building AI—are in charge of AI, and not the other way around. It’s on us as industry leaders to develop AI that maximizes positive benefits and mitigates negative outcomes.
